Shadi, Saas-Bahu, aur Zehni Sukoon: Family Dynamics aur Mental Health
Shadi ke baad zindagi sirf do logon ka rishta nahi hoti—aksar do families, different expectations, traditions, responsibilities aur personalities bhi ek saath aa jati hain.
Kabhi ye relationships bohat khoobsurat support system ban jate hain. Lekin kabhi misunderstandings, criticism, interference, unrealistic expectations, communication gaps aur unresolved conflicts shadi ke baad stress ko barha dete hain.
Especially joint family system mein personal space aur boundaries maintain karna challenging ho sakta hai.
Aur jab daily tension emotional wellbeing ko affect karne lage, to sawaal sirf yeh nahi hota ke “Saas-bahu mein problem kis ki hai?”
Asal sawaal yeh hai:
“Is family mein sab log ek doosre ke saath kis tarah behtar communicate kar sakte hain—and apna zehni sukoon kaise protect kar sakte hain?”
Shadi Ke Baad Stress: Jab Nayi Zindagi Mein Pressure Barh Jaye
Shadi ek major life transition hai.
Nayi responsibilities, new relationships, financial expectations, household routines aur cultural traditions ke saath adjust karna naturally challenging ho sakta hai.
Ek newly married woman ke liye situation kuch is tarah ho sakti hai:
Naya ghar + nayi family + nayi responsibilities + relationship expectations + apni identity ko maintain karna
Aur agar woh joint family mein reh rahi ho, to usay multiple logon ki expectations ko samajhna aur manage karna pad sakta hai.
Research on mental health in Pakistan has identified factors affecting women that can include marital circumstances, economic dependence, joint or extended family systems and domestic violence.
Lekin ek important baat:
Joint family khud problem nahi hai.
A supportive joint family emotional security, childcare, companionship aur practical help ka powerful source ho sakti hai.
Problem tab develop hoti hai jab support control mein, concern criticism mein, aur family involvement constant interference mein badal jaye.
Saas-Bahu Tension: Sirf Ek “Family Drama” Nahi
“Saas bahu tension” ko hum aksar joke ya entertainment ki tarah dekhte hain.
Lekin real life mein repeated conflict kisi person's emotional wellbeing ko seriously affect kar sakta hai.
For example:
Bahu ko lag sakta hai:
- “Mujhe har waqt judge kiya jata hai.”
- “Meri koi privacy nahi.”
- “Meri har baat mein mistake nikali jati hai.”
- “Mujhse meri capacity se zyada expectations hain.”
Saas ko lag sakta hai:
- “Hamari baat ki koi value nahi.”
- “Ghar ke purane tareeqon ki respect nahi hoti.”
- “Mera beta mujhse door ho raha hai.”
- “Meri bahu family mein adjust nahi karna chahti.”
Husband beech mein soch sakta hai:
“Main kis ki side loon?”
Aur yahin se conflict ka cycle shuru ho sakta hai.
Ek person's intention aur doosre person's experience hamesha same nahi hote.
Isliye blame ke bajaye communication zaroori hai.
Family Conflict Mental Health Ko Kaise Affect Kar Sakta Hai?
Har disagreement mental health problem nahi hota.
Lekin persistent, intense aur unresolved family conflict emotional wellbeing ko affect kar sakta hai.
A person may experience:
- Constant stress
- Anxiety
- Irritability
- Sadness
- Overthinking
- Sleep problems
- Headaches or physical tension
- Loss of concentration
- Emotional exhaustion
- Social withdrawal
- Low self-confidence
- Feeling helpless or trapped
Agar these symptoms persistent hain aur daily life ko significantly affect kar rahe hain, to qualified mental health professional se baat karna helpful ho sakta hai.
Pakistan mein mental-health help-seeking par stigma, cost, access aur social attitudes barriers ho sakte hain.
“Har Ghar Mein Hota Hai” — Kya Yeh Enough Explanation Hai?
Kabhi family members kehte hain:
“Har ghar mein thori bohat tension hoti hai.”
Bilkul—disagreements normal hain.
Lekin normal disagreement aur unhealthy relationship pattern mein farq hota hai.
Healthy disagreement:
“Mujhe tumhari baat se disagreement hai. Aao baat karte hain.”
Unhealthy pattern:
“Tum kabhi kuch theek nahi karti.”
Healthy relationships mein conflict ho sakta hai, lekin respect aur safety remain karni chahiye.
Repeated humiliation, threats, coercive control, physical violence, sexual violence, financial abuse or intimidation ko simply “family adjustment” keh kar ignore nahi karna chahiye.
WHO Pakistan has highlighted the importance of survivor-centred care for women experiencing gender-based violence and notes that stigma can make disclosure and access to psychological support more difficult.
Communication Ka Golden Rule: Person Ko Nahi, Problem Ko Address Karein
Family conflicts mein hum aksar personality attack kar dete hain.
❌ “Aap hamesha aisa karti hain.”
❌ “Tumhein tameez hi nahi.”
❌ “Aapko meri koi baat pasand nahi.”
Try instead:
✅ “Jab meri personal decisions par repeatedly comment hota hai, mujhe stressed feel hota hai. Kya hum is par calmly baat kar sakte hain?”
Is approach ko I-statements kehte hain.
Formula:
“Jab ___ hota hai, mujhe ___ feel hota hai. Main chahti/chahta hoon ke hum ___ karein.”
For example:
“Jab meri parenting decisions par sab ke saamne discussion hota hai, mujhe uncomfortable feel hota hai. Main chahti hoon ke hum is baat ko privately discuss karein.”
This focuses on behavior + feeling + request, instead of blame.
Saas Aur Bahu Dono Ke Liye Ek Simple Communication Tool
Before reacting, ask three questions:
1. Kya Yeh Zaroori Hai?
Har difference ko argument banana zaroori nahi.
2. Kya Yeh Baat Abhi Karni Zaroori Hai?
Kabhi person tired, angry, hungry ya emotionally overwhelmed hota hai.
Timing matters.
3. Kya Main Yeh Baat Respectfully Keh Sakti/Sakta Hoon?
Agar jawab “no” hai, pause lena better ho sakta hai.
Husband Ka Role: Judge Nahi, Bridge Banein
Marriage mein husband ka role bohat important ho sakta hai—especially jab wife aur mother ke darmiyan tension ho.
Lekin husband ko “kis ki side?” ke frame se bahar nikalna chahiye.
Instead:
“Main dono relationships ko respect karta hoon, lekin disrespect ko support nahi karunga.”
Husband kya kar sakta hai?
- Wife ko privately listen kare
- Mother ki feelings ko bhi respectfully samjhe
- Public arguments se bachaye
- Clear boundaries establish kare
- Communication ko encourage kare
- Har conflict mein immediate judgment na de
- Serious problems ko ignore na kare
- Zaroorat par family counseling suggest kare
Neutral rehna aur injustice ko ignore karna ek hi baat nahi hai.
Boundaries Kya Hain?
Boundary ka matlab family se distance banana nahi.
Boundary ka matlab hai:
“Yeh meri responsibility hai, yeh meri privacy hai, aur yeh woh limit hai jise main respectfully communicate karna chahti/chahta hoon.”
Joint family mein boundaries particularly important ho sakti hain.
Examples:
Privacy:
“Main chahti hoon ke mere aur mere husband ke personal matters hum dono pehle discuss karein.”
Parenting:
“Advice ke liye thank you. Hum doctor ki guidance aur apni understanding ke mutabiq yeh approach follow karenge.”
Personal Time:
“Mujhe roz 30 minutes apne liye chahiye. Is se mujhe mentally recharge hone mein help milti hai.”
Communication:
“Agar koi issue ho to please mujhe privately bata dein. Sab ke saamne discuss karne se mujhe uncomfortable feel hota hai.”
Joint Family Mein Self-Care Kaise Karein?
Self-care ka matlab expensive spa, vacation ya hours of meditation zaroori nahi.
Sometimes self-care is simply:
“Mujhe 20 minutes khud ke liye chahiye.”
🌿 1. Apna Chhota Sa Personal Space Banayein
Agar separate room possible nahi, to ek chair, corner, balcony ya quiet place ko apna “reset space” banayein.
🧘 2. 5-Minute Mindful Breathing
5 minutes ke liye phone side par rakhein.
Slow breath in.
Slow breath out.
Apne shoulders relax karein.
Bas present moment notice karein.
📱 3. Digital Boundaries
Har family WhatsApp message ka immediate reply zaroori nahi.
🚶 4. Movement
Short walk, stretching ya gentle exercise mood aur energy ke liye helpful routine ban sakti hai.
☕ 5. Mindful Chai
Chai ko sirf “break” nahi—pause banayein.
Cup ko feel karein.
Aroma notice karein.
Slowly sip karein.
5 minutes ke liye bas present moment mein rahen.
❤️ 6. Apni Identity Ko Zinda Rakhein
Marriage ke baad bhi aap:
- Friend hain
- Professional hain
- Daughter hain
- Learner hain
- Creative person hain
- Individual hain
Marriage aapki identity ka ek hissa hai—poori identity nahi.
Therapy: “Ghar Ki Baat Ghar Mein” Se Aage
Pakistan mein therapy ko lekar abhi bhi misconceptions aur stigma maujood hain. Research has found that stigma within social networks can discourage Pakistani women from seeking specialist mental health services.
Some families think:
“Therapy ki kya zaroorat hai? Hum ghar mein solve kar lenge.”
Sometimes family discussion really can help.
But sometimes the same family system is part of the problem—and then an independent, qualified professional can provide a safer space to understand patterns and develop healthier communication.
Therapy ka matlab yeh nahi:
❌ “Meri family buri hai.”
❌ “Meri shaadi fail ho rahi hai.”
❌ “Main pagal hoon.”
Therapy ka matlab ho sakta hai:
✅ “Main apne emotions ko better samajhna chahti hoon.”
✅ “Main healthier communication seekhna chahti hoon.”
✅ “Main apni boundaries respectfully set karna chahti hoon.”
✅ “Hum apne relationship conflicts ko professionally address karna chahte hain.”
Therapy is not a verdict against the family. It can be a tool for understanding and change.
Family Counseling Pakistan: Kab Consider Karni Chahiye?
Family counseling ya couples counseling consider ki ja sakti hai jab:
- Same argument repeatedly hota ho
- Communication constantly breaks down
- Husband-wife conflicts family members tak spread ho rahe hon
- Boundaries repeatedly ignored ho rahi hon
- Resentment build ho raha ho
- Trust problems hain
- Family members ek doosre ko samajhne mein difficulty experience kar rahe hon
- Conflict daily wellbeing affect kar raha ho
The goal should not be:
“Kaun jeetega?”
The goal should be:
“Hum healthier relationship kaise build kar sakte hain?”
Lekin Har Family Conflict Counseling Se Solve Nahi Hota
Yeh distinction bohat important hai.
Agar situation mein domestic violence, serious threats, coercive control, sexual violence, or immediate danger ho, to priority “better communication” nahi—safety honi chahiye.
Victims of violence may need medical, legal, psychosocial, shelter, and other forms of support. Pakistan's Ministry of Human Rights lists its toll-free 1099 helpline for legal advice on human-rights violations and also identifies women-centre services that include medical, legal, shelter and psychological counseling support.
In Punjab, the Punjab Commission on the Status of Women lists 1043 as a 24/7 toll-free women's helpline addressing issues including domestic violence, harassment and gender discrimination.
If someone is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services or seek immediate help from a safe location.
7 Golden Rules for a Peaceful Family Environment
1. Respect Before Advice
Har advice zaroori nahi hoti.
2. Privacy Is Not Disrespect
Healthy boundaries family rejection nahi hain.
3. Listen Before Defending
Pehle samjhein, phir jawab dein.
4. Don't Use the Husband as a Messenger
Saas aur bahu ke minor issues ko repeatedly husband ke through communicate karna conflict barha sakta hai.
5. Avoid Public Humiliation
Private disagreement ko public criticism mein convert na karein.
6. Don't Keep Score
“Main ne tumhare liye itna kiya…”
Relationships accounting systems nahi hote.
7. Ask for Help Early
Problem ko years tak accumulate karne ke bajaye early support lena easier ho sakta hai.
Ek Family Conversation Ka Example
Agar family mein tension chal rahi ho, to ek calm conversation kuch is tarah start ho sakti hai:
“Hum sab ek family hain aur main kisi ko blame nahi karna chahta/chahti. Lekin mujhe lagta hai ke hum sab kuch time se stressed hain. Kya hum calmly baith kar baat kar sakte hain ke kis cheez se problem ho rahi hai aur hum kya change kar sakte hain?”
Then establish three rules:
1. No shouting.
2. No personal attacks.
3. Everyone gets a chance to speak.
Simple rules—but powerful.
Shadi Mein Sukoon Perfect Family Se Nahi Aata
Har family mein differences honge.
Har generation ka apna perspective hoga.
Saas aur bahu har baat par agree nahi karengi.
Husband-wife bhi har decision par agree nahi karenge.
Sukoon ka matlab conflict ki complete absence nahi.
Sukoon ka matlab hai:
Conflict ke bawajood respect, communication, boundaries aur emotional safety ka hona.
A healthy family doesn't ask:
“Kaun ghalat hai?”
It also asks:
“Hum sab is situation ko behtar kaise bana sakte hain?”
A Message for Every Woman
Agar shadi ke baad aap emotionally exhausted feel kar rahi hain, constantly anxious hain, har waqt criticism se overwhelmed hain, ya aapko lagta hai ke aapki apni identity kahin kho gayi hai—
aapki feelings important hain.
Aapko har cheez silently tolerate karna zaroori nahi.
Aapko har argument jeetna bhi zaroori nahi.
Aur help lena weakness nahi hai.
Kabhi solution better communication hota hai.
Kabhi boundaries.
Kabhi couples counseling.
Kabhi individual therapy.
Aur kabhi, especially where there is abuse, safety and specialized support must come first.

Frequently Asked Questions
Kya saas-bahu ke conflicts normal hain?
Differences and disagreements can occur in any family. However, repeated humiliation, intimidation, abuse, or severe ongoing conflict should not simply be dismissed as “normal family issues.”
Kya joint family mental health ke liye buri hoti hai?
Not necessarily. Joint families can provide companionship, childcare and emotional support. The impact depends greatly on the quality of relationships, communication, privacy, respect and boundaries.
Kya boundaries banana badtameezi hai?
No. Healthy boundaries can actually improve relationships when they are communicated respectfully.
Kya therapy ka matlab hai ke meri shaadi kharab hai?
No. Therapy can be a preventive and supportive resource for communication, emotional wellbeing, relationship difficulties and personal growth. Seeking help doesn't automatically mean a marriage or family has failed.
Agar husband family conflict mein meri baat nahi samajhta to kya karun?
Try discussing the issue at a calm time using specific examples and “I feel…” statements rather than accusations. If communication repeatedly fails and both partners are willing, couples counseling may be worth considering.
Agar family mein domestic violence ho to kya karna chahiye?
Safety comes first. Seek support from a trusted person or appropriate professional/service. In Pakistan, the Ministry of Human Rights operates the 1099 toll-free helpline, while Punjab's women's helpline is 1043.
